Residing in Thailand on a Retirement Visa
Foreign nationals 50 years of age and above are eligible for one-year, renewable visas to retire in Thailand.
In order to apply for such a visa, the foreigner must enter Thailand with a Non-Immigrant “O” visa obtainable at any Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad. The applicant must also show proof of the following:
- A minimum balance in a Thai bank account of THB 800,000 (USD 21,950.); and a bank letter confirming the current balance; OR
- A minimum monthly income (e.g. pension) of THB 65,000/month (USD 1,780) with supporting documentation; OR
- A combination of bank funds and monthly income equivalent to THB 800,000 in the first year.
Once the individual enters Thailand, he or she is required to file an application form and submit supporting documents to the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok. Approval time is usually one month. The visa is renewable at the end of the first year, without difficulty.
